Search companies such as Google sell ads in response to user queries, via an auction. It has been a few years since these systems launched. This talk will provide an overview of the theoretical foundation behind such systems, in particular, the game-theoretic properties and dynamics underlying them. We will also discuss what we may need for the next few years: new auctions, optimization methods and algorithms for statistical estimates. There are plenty of open problems.
