George Hart at MIT
a collaboration between MIT and sculptor/mathematician George Hart

Artist-in-Residence Oct.-Nov. 2003

George W. Hart is a sculptor, mathematician, and computer scientist. He is currently a research professor at the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook. Hart is well-known for his wide array of geometric sculpture based generally around the symmetry of the sphere.

Hart was recently an artist in residence at MIT from October 29 to November 4, 2003, cosponsored by the MIT Office of the Arts and by the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

Hart's residence was covered in a TechTalk article on October 29, 2003 and also in two separate articles (Salamanders are a team effort) and (Artist-inresidence finds his muse in a clanging oven rack) on November 19, 2003.

The residence involved three main activities detailed on separate pages:

  • Design and construction of Salamanders sculpture, made of 30 identical flat pieces in the shape of a salamander.
  • Barnraising of the sculpture, a group assembly involving around 40 people from the MIT community to put together the 30 pieces and complete the sculpture.
  • Two talks given by Hart about his sculpture. The first talk was generally about all of his sculpture, and the second talk was specifically about the design tool he has built for designing symmetric arrangements of planar pieces.
